Take your dog to work day

It is take your dog to work day. I have read about it again on Modern Dog. Check out their story at  Modern Dog.

Perhaps you had an opportunity to take your faithful friend with you today.

Going to work, for me has meant either driving there or commuting on the sky train, and as of now, we still can’t take dogs bigger than a bread box on the trains and buses.

Lucky for me though now, and today, I am working at home at my desk and my dog is right here with me. If he is not at my feet, he is on his post on the couch, and when he thinks it is time for me to take a break he comes to look at me, and off we go.

At work many of us that sit, sit too long, and a dog will get you up on your feet and out for a walk.

Many dogs already go to work every day. Just the other day I met a lovely big Labrador, and I thought he might be a working dog. When I asked the man he was with if he was, he said, in way is he. He is the mascot and I take him to work with me every day.

There are of course so many wonderful official working dogs that help those that need, or work at our airports ( no not selling tickets), and work with rescue teams.

All working/service dogs make a sacrifice and it is truly amazing. They are all so committed to what they do.

As well as the official working dog, the mascot dog who goes to work every day, there are many others that a workplace would benefit from.

Well behaved social dogs add so much to the workplace.

I used to take my dog to work and he would sit on his own chair in my office.  No dog bed for him, he liked the people chair. Everyone used to be so much calmer with my dog around, when I used to take him to work. ( not to say they were not calm already, or I made them uncomfortable- yet generally when someone came to meet with me or talk to me about something in my office it was not to tell me the sun was shining today, it was to ask advice, or to tell me of a problem we had to solve, and sometimes they started out with tension. Not for long, as my dog would always greet them and seemed to know if anyone needed special attention, and even recognized those that would just rather see him and not have him visit up close.  That was on Vancouver Island and I had to drive there also as dogs are still not allowed there either on transit, unless they are small and can fit in a container you can carry. Or service dogs of course, they are allowed.

I hope next year that anyone who wants to take their dog to work on transit will be able to. Of course they better make sure they go in very early, or arrange to go in late, so as to not travel in peak time, as that would make sense. Dogs and people together don’t need the stress of cramped buses and trains.

As you might know if you have visited my site, I am advocating for dogs of any size transit (non peak times, with certain rules), and I hope to know more about it by October.

And at

Pet Sitters International.

it was started by them. This is the 18th annual event. While this is a US we can celebrate too in Canada.

the dog has powers  and we have brought them into our lives to be our companions, or to be working dogs.  I take the companionship of my dog very seriously, so much so that I have recently formed a group called Citizen Canine Companion.  Read about it here on this site and very soon, at its own site www.citizencaninecompanion.com
