My dog is having a birthday, he is turning 8. For a whippet, based on previous ones I have had he is at half of his possible age.

By most standards he is a senior dog at 7

 

I don’t think of him as senior, I think if him as maybe 45

 

Well, dogs do age differently than people.

The first 15 years according to experts it equal to one human year

And the next 9 to another human year. After that experts say a dog will age between 3 and 5 years every calendar year. Wow, I know what that that feels like. This last six months feels like I am a mid size dog, and I have aged 2 years. I am glad though it does not work that way for humans.

 

So based on this I can calculate my dog as

15+9 = 24for 2 years

And for the next 6, I will take the middle ground since he is a mid size dog, and say 4, so that is 4 times 6= 24.

And that makes him 48

 

Well if I took it at 3.5 years instead of 4 he would be 3.5 times 6=21 plus 24= 45

Bingo

So then I wondered, what about some other dogs. I entered in my favourites, as well as one or two small and one very large dog to see what came up. Seems the pattern is

8 year old mid size dog= 55

8 year old larger dog= 61

8 year old really cute small dog= 48

An 8 year old greyhound is 61

An 8 year old Dalmatian is  55

An 8 year old GSP is 61

An 8 year old Shih Tzu is 48

Gordon setter 61

Great Dane 61

Lhasa Apso  48

 Whippet  life expectancy of adult is 93.  so that makes my 8 year old 60

If life expectancy of adult is 70, then he is only 48

If 85 then 5.8

So, based on this, if I think (hope) my life expectancy is 93 then, my dog is turning 60 this Saturday.
