The green dog coat
The green dog coat
By Margaret Halsey
I was just getting ready to take my dog for a walk. It was cold, well for Vancouver, and he always wears his coat, as he is thin short haired dog. I looked everywhere and could not find it. Under the coats I had piled on the chair? On the couch under a cushion, on the floor, nowhere! Ok maybe I left it in the car when I went out last. I don’t think so. Better look though. O, what is this, I had forgotten about this one. I had kept this one in the car for him. This was the other green coat, my previous dog’s coat. It is a bit worn, and has white cloth tape keeping it together. Yet it is warm, a warmer coat than the one that I seem to have lost. So I put it on him and began my walk up the hill, one of my frequent walks. I thought how lucky I went to the car, even though I did not find the green coat I was looking for, I did dig up the one left in the car, and it will do just fine today as it is cold. I had already tried to put another coat on him and he would not walk in it. It was too small, and I think it was dragging on parts of his body. I don’t blame him for not walking. I would not either, in his shoes. (No, he does not really wear shoes) Well, just at the other side of the crossroad, in the middle of the sidewalk, there it was -the green dog coat. I could not believe it. I was so happy to find it. I remember then that I had walked this route the day before, and it had got warm and I was carrying his coat, and groceries, as well as walking him. I guess I dropped it then. That was mid afternoon yesterday, and now it was almost mid afternoon today. It is not likely there had been no one pass this corner in all this time. Have you ever seen a glove or a scarf hung on a tree? People find them and hang it where they found it in the hopes that the one who lost it will come back. Easier to see on a tree! Well there were no trees nearby. Did I drop it in the middle of the sideway and is stayed there undisturbed for almost 24 hours, in a busy neighborhood. Or did someone place it here hoping I would find it. I took it as a sign. There s a sort of unwritten code at dog parks, if you find a leash or a collar, or anything, you leave it there, hang it on the fence, and it will mostly likely be found by its owner. You don’t take it home. Even if it is brand new and you want it. It is not done. Did someone use the dog park code and leave it here for me. I walk in the neighbourhood every day, and many people see me with my dog wearing his coat, yet I doubt anyone is that observant to know, if they saw the coat, off the dog, whose coat it was. What does this tell me? I have decided it tells me that there is a code on the street too. If you find someone’s dog coat or any dog item that you leave it there so the person who dropped it can see it, next time they walk by. It is still to me quite amazing that it was still there. I am so happy though that it was. This coat was handmade and it came with him when I adopted him. It also is bit worn, but it fits him well, and he seems to like wearing it. Yes, there is a dog owner code. And maybe this even applies to anyone. If you see a dog coat, don’t take it home for your dog, leave it, the owner will come back for it. I did, and I am very grateful to the person who left it. On March 1, a good sign for a good month to come.
